What is Phodigraphy?

I’ve asked myself for a long time, what is it, exactly, that I do –  trying to focus on what it is and summarizing it in a single word. Let’s see; I’ve been a photographer for the last 25 years and I’ve been doing photo manipulation for myself and others for about 12 years. Through the last 10 years, I’ve made many print designs for different fashion companies and, truly, there’s hardly anything I do professionally where I don’t combine at least some of the knowledge, practice, and techniques of all of the above.

Recently it struck me; I’m a phodigrapher, I create art using traditional knowledge, but also using everything the digital age was kind enough to give me. I combine optics with digital work and brush strokes. If Photography means rendering with light, then Phodigraphy must be rendering with light and digital technology

I  capture bits of reality and present them as I’d like to see them, not necessarily as they are. Be it a mountain, a piece of clothing, a leaf, a jewel, or a cloud. I believe my job is to make everything look better. The piece stays with the observer for a long time because it makes them feel or think. I try to evoke emotions, shooting mostly simple things, with a special touch.

During my last show, I noticed people inspecting my work closely. Some asked me, “How did you paint this?” My reply was, “Well, it’s actually a photograph.” This is why I invented the word for what I do: phodigraphy: I needed it to explain what I do.

I often hear people comparing a beautiful photograph to a painting and vice versa. Well, if that’s where I am, I’m home.

Closest you’ll get to nature without leaving home

I was introduced to this movie a couple of years after it came out. I have not since watched a movie that was so beautiful and fascinating as Microcosmos.

This movie not only brings you really close to nature, but it is lit and shot so beautifully that I’m still glued to the screen every time I watch it. if you love nature and photography, especially macro photography, and you missed this one somehow, do yourself a favor, get this disk and watch it, this is the real “A bug’s life“.

It’s a French film and though there’s not much dialog in it, an English soundtrack is available from the menu.

Something about people photography

Though directing my subjects is a part of the job, I really find it rewarding to make myself “invisible” and try to catch people when they are not aware. when shooting people who are not professional models/actors, of all ages, I always battle to capture a “not obviously posed image”. I’m not a hunter but it seems to me that shooting like that may be the closest thing to hunting, I try to be a part of the scenery and be aware where my main subjects are at all times, so when an opportunity arises, I’ll notice it and be ready. here’s a sweet girl I shot, on her Tea party style birthday.

Roadside survivors

A while back I’ve found these old shoe forms near a closed down old shoemaker’s store. they waited for me in a little pile of stuff that was going to the trash. I had to take it to the studio and play with it. I decided to make two similar compositions that will have a different feel to them. here’s what I came up with.

Photoshop is not evil

Original is on the left
Original is on the left

I get annoyed when people see a picture of a pretty girl and automatically say: “eh, it’s all Photoshopped” as if Photoshop is the long version of a four-letter word, I say, thanks to Photoshop we can give the client a brilliant result without having to dip ourselves in chemicals under red lights (I do admit that the smell of a developer makes me a bit nostalgic still, but it’s because I don’t have to spend time with it anymore). Here is an image manipulation job I received from a Las Vegas client, where the shot she sent me looked nice but needed “something..”. on the right, is the before image. first, I cropped it just a bit to get Katie to be more dominant in the frame, the rest was mainly some perfecting of stubborn hair and a very careful dodge and burn process that is similar but a bit more precise than what I would be able to do in the darkroom.

Following, are a some more “dramatic” Before and after samples

Single light photography

Single light photography

Single light photography.

My most valuable learning experience was working as a photographer’s assistant back in the late 80’s, while starting my professional photography career.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned was using a single light source to set up an atmosphere.

In  nature we have only a single main light source (sun), the human brain is completely happy and can easily make sense of a scene that has a single light direction. practicing this method in the studio helped me advance and master this technique in the studio as well as out on location.

In this shot, You can see Tiffany dancing in front of a single light, In this case it is a window.

In my view

I’ve contemplated writing a blog for a while now, the reasons are many, I may discuss them in later posts. this blog will mainly follow my photography and other things I’m involved in or interested in. Please don’t hesitate to ask me any photography, Lightroom or Photoshop related questions you may have, your thoughts and comments are welcome.
