Pushing the boundaries with Adobe Lightroom 5

When I first started shooting rock concerts, There was no Adobe Lightroom 5 to help me. I was used to shooting T-max 3200 black & white, pushing it about 2-3 stops to get what I wanted in the darkroom, expressive rough shots, with grain you can shave with. I was and still try to get shots that show action (by sometimes using slower shutter speeds) and enhancing the atmosphere by trying to predict where the lights are going to fall next and clicking the shutter when the lights hit where I want.

Today, shooting in chaotic (light wise) and dark environments is different, I do it by shooting RAW files at very high ISO, and developing them in Lightroom 5. Developing in Lightroom 5 allows more accurate white balance and broad color control. testing, correcting and printing the kind of images you can see below, “old school”, would take a very long time.

Here’s a selection of “Rain King” concert images I shot at the “Whiskey a GO-Go” on Sunset Blvd. last Saturday. “rain King” are, Ben Shafrir – Drums, Eli Sokolow – Guitar and Vocals and Yali Bitan – Bass and Vocals. These guys really know their stuff! You can listen to them using the player underneath the gallery. In their own words, they are an “L.A. based rock trio whose mission is to wake the universe from the coma of auto-tuned digital modernity and rekindle the flames lit by the ancient warriors of face-melting, spine curving rock & roll.”

No “Photoshop” was used in the editing of these images, (only Lightroom :).

Round Midnight

Last night, Just Round Midnight, I had a little shooting trip that at a certain moment felt just like an African safari, Including deer sightings and the sense of potential mountain lions lurking in the shadows.

My aim was to use the light from the full moon that was hanging gloriously right in front of me, to shoot the landscape.

'Round Midnight 1

“Round Midnight 1”, was shot facing the low full moon, which created a huge difference in exposure values through the image, That’s why I made an HDR composition. HDR stands for ‘High dynamic range imaging’, It’s a technique that is based on Ansel Adams’s zone system, You can read more about it here. To capture the details I was looking for, I used 8 exposures with different light values for each one, from 1 to 30 seconds, all shot on a tripod and combined with Photoshop HDR Pro.

'Round Midnight 2

“Round Midnight 2” Is a single shot made on a tripod at a 30 seconds exposure, processed with Adobe Lightroom.

Compawssion, A book of rescued dogs portraits

A few months ago, I was asked to shoot Frank Bruynbroek’s portrait for his upcoming book called Compawssion it is a project he has been working on for the last 15 years, as well I was asked to shoot and edit a short teaser for the book.

Frank’s passion for photography and his love and compassion for dogs have culminated in a beautiful book of photographs of rescued dogs, and I was happy to take part in it.

You can read more about Frank here.

Rafael Moreira, A Musician’s Portrait

Rafael Moreira Musicians Institute ad 2001

The first time I shot a portrait of Rafael Moreira was quite a few years ago, It was a full-page, black and white ad for Musicians Institute (MI) in Hollywood, California, that appeared in Guitar player magazine.
Since then We had many shooting sessions, Here’s the original ad and a few more images from other sessions.

Here’s an excerpt from his Gibson article:
“Brazilian guitar sensation Rafael Moreira is the true representation of a diverse musician. Infinitely creative, this guitarist, vocalist, and producer pride himself with an incredible pedigree of accomplishments working not only independently, but with many of the world’s most influential musical élite.

Currently, Moreira thrives in his latest musical undertaking as lead guitarist for NBC’s hit-maker “The Voice”. Relishing the intense working environment alongside other equally gifted musicians; his diverse playing style is well suited for the overwhelming task of facilitating contestants through songs in varied genres. With little room for improvisation, Moreira’s creativity shines conversely in music where the original version has little to no guitar tracks. Here, he is unrestricted in embellishing the music, allowing it to breathe and flow in a new direction.” Read more […]
