A horse foal was born

This Sunday I had a special treat, a horse foal was born. This baby horse was born just a few hours earlier. It was a “Bambi” moment for me when I went to see the newborn princess.

I like driving out-of-town to visit friends. I like walking in nature, enjoying the views and the animals, taking pictures of all I find interesting. This trip was very rewarding, cuteness ruled the day.
If you like these images as much as I do and want them on your wall, you can get them here

A vintage mechanical tin toy on its tricycle

antique vintage mechanical tin toy riding Tricycle

The first time I was looking at this vintage mechanical tin toy, made me think of spring. This toy still has bright, very appealing colors, I think the smile is great too.
I made the image bright, to resemble a spring day.
The natural triangular silhouette makes for a stable, calm composition.

I don’t really know if it’s representing a girl or a boy, but The kid looks happy.
While shooting this toy, I was looking for a way to capture eye contact and create an appealing pose.
I’m always looking for a way to create communication between the subject and the observer, and the eyes can make it, or break it.
Mechanical toys and other contraptions always fascinated me. As a little kid, I loved mechanical things and was always trying to understand how they work, by disassembling and putting them back together (to be honest, I could only put only some of them back together).

A Vintage boy-scout doll

Vintage boy scout doll toys fine art photography

This Vintage boy scout doll is from the early 1900s. this toy was made of wood and then hand-painted.

Taking a portrait of toys and people, have many things in common. I keep in mind many of the things I do when taking portraits of people when I’m shooting toys, having good eye contact is one of them.
Good eye contact makes an effective image because it helps the viewer and subject connect.

As in many of my images, I have an idea when I’m creating the image. But rather than revealing my ideas, I prefer to hear what the viewers have in mind; for me, any interpretation is correct.

Handling these little old toys, while setting up a shot, make me think about the child who first received them as a present.
Was it a Christmas, or a birthday present, or an unexpected surprise because she/he was the apple of their parents’ eyes. It makes me think about the happiness it brought these kids, little sparkles of joy on their life’s timeline, and how they are probably no more… and how a box or a drawer became home for these toys.

I’m happy I can put this Vintage boy scout doll and his little friends in the spotlight again.

Reilly the Japanese Chin dog

Japanese Chin dog fine art prints

This adorable Japanese Chin dog named Reilly (meaning: Courageous, valiant) is a little buddy of mine. Reilly is one of the most adorable toy dogs I’ve met, He’s sweet, playful and we’re always happy when we meet and play.

Looking at Japanese Chins at play, made me think they are bred to look like little furry dragons.

I love taking this little pup’s pictures. I find Reilly’s little face to be very expressive. it seems to me he likes to pose for the camera and he’s doing it with patience and grace.
This digital work captures his persona very well, the image of a poet reflecting as he gazes towards the horizon. I gave him a painterly treatment to enhance the texture of his beautiful soft fur.

San Gabriel mountains

I shot this image of San Gabriel mountains from a Cessna 182 a few years ago, Shot it and forgot about it.
Sometimes I return from a trip and just don’t have the time to handle all the images that are not work-related, I try to do it, but now and then Some images escape me.

San Gabriel mountains

I revisited this image 2 days ago and decided to develop it again.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 allows me more control than I had in earlier versions, It feels more organic now, a little more like how I would treat the image in the chemical darkroom.
So from being obscured, this image is now one of my favorite images.

Tinting Black and White photos

Early in my photography career, I was experimenting with tinting Black and White photos. I was using “Ecoline by Talens” liquid watercolors, having lots of fun, and after a while I was able to get consistent results.

Tinting Black and White photos digitally have more freedom, It’s less adventurous, more straight forward and gets the job done.

Below is a tinted Black and White image of August, Shot in South California with my favorite 80mm 1.8 lens.

Tinting Black and White photos tutorial

Here’s a great tutorial from Adobe T.V. By the wonderful Julieanne Kost, Exploring the best way to convert images to black and white, as well as adding tonal overlays, edge effects, selective coloring, and film grain textures. Then, you’ll learn how to apply those effects to multiple files using Sync options and Presets using Adobe Lightroom 5.
